How to clean your pool filter
Regularly cleaning your pool cartridge filter will help maintain optimal filtration and extend the lifespan of the cartridge. Remember to consult the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidelines or recommendations for your particular filter model.
Turn off the pool pump
Before starting any maintenance on the pool filter, make sure to turn off the pool pump to avoid any accidents.
Remove the filter
Open the filter housing or lid and carefully remove the cartridge filter from its compartment. Take note of how the filter is installed so that you can easily put it back later.
Rinse off loose debris
Use a garden hose to rinse off loose debris and dirt from the cartridge. Start from the top and work your way down, making sure to clean each pleat thoroughly.
Prepare a cleaning solution
Fill a large bucket or container with water and add a pool filter cleaner or a mixture of water and muriatic acid (consult the manufacturer's instructions for the proper ratio). Be cautious when handling chemicals and always follow safety guidelines.
Soak the cartridge
Place the cartridge in the cleaning solution and ensure it is completely submerged. Allow it to soak for the recommended time, usually around 1 to 2 hours. This will help dissolve and remove any built-up oils, minerals, and debris that rinsing alone may not eliminate.
Scrub the cartridge
After soaking, use a soft brush or a filter cleaning tool to gently scrub the cartridge, paying attention to the pleats and crevices. This will help dislodge any remaining dirt or debris.
Rinse thoroughly
Once you've finished scrubbing, rinse the cartridge filter thoroughly with clean water. Make sure to remove all traces of the cleaning solution to avoid any potential chemical imbalances in the pool water.
Inspect the cartridge
Take a close look at the cartridge for any signs of damage or wear. If you notice any tears, broken pleats, or significant deterioration, it may be time to replace the cartridge.
Reinstall the filter
Once the cartridge is clean and dry, carefully place it back into the filter housing or compartment, making sure it is properly aligned and seated.
Turn on the pool pump
Finally, turn on the pool pump and ensure that water is flowing smoothly through the system. Check for any leaks or irregularities in the filtration process.
